The Anna Maria Island Privateers was established as a Not For Profit group in 1971 by a small group of individuals interested in being a support group for needed Manatee county and island youth programs.
Their Charter goals were to promote activities for the betterment of youth, to render service to the community and to participate in area events.
The Privateers sponsor a number of ongoing activities to raise funds such as mullet smokes, thieves markets, golf tournament, business captures, special events and of course, tax deductible donations are always accepted.
The Privateers hold various activities throughout the year including the 4th of July parade, Christmas Parade (complete with Gifts for the children and Santa) and Snooks Adams Kids Day with hotdogs, soda and games.
Members of the Krewe donate their time, money, blood, sweat and tears. Pirate garb is required and only limited by each Krewe member's piratey imagination! Members are responsible for providing their own throw beads, bling pins and medallions, etc.
Membership is open to any and all!! To become a Privateer, an individual must be sponsored by a current "Black Shirt" member. The applicant must attend at least two meetings prior to being eligible to be voted in as a probationary "Grey Shirt" member, which lasts at least six months during which time he or she is expected to actively participate in events prior to being voted in as a full "Black Shirt" member. Annual membership dues are currently $150. Dues pay for expenses such as insurance, parade float maintenance, materials and office needs.
